One Square Metre

A pavement edge where asphalt, a concrete kerb and a strip of weeds meet the foot of a cream and red painted wall
Where the ground has been covered, patched and covered again.

Ground, film and text
Two short films

One square metre of ground, chosen because asphalt, concrete, brick and grass all meet in it. I tried many ways of looking at it and kept coming back to video. The first film is about land reclamation: the ground under the asphalt was once sea. The second is about building sites, and how the grass in the cracks is always the first thing to go. Both mix text, sound and moving image.

Asphalt is made of oil. But oil is from the ocean. And now it's here, on this fake land made on ocean. I find that sad.
